STUDY

- Two bachelor’s degree programmes: Musical Arts, with its 26 principal study options, and Music Education.

- Four master’s degree programmes: Musical Arts (26 principal studies available), Instrumental and Vocal Education (22 principal studies), Music Theory Education (3 principal studies) and Music Education. The principal study, i.e. the primary field of study, is taught in the form of INDIVIDUAL LESSONS and consists of three hours per week – two hours of individual lessons and one hour of lessons with the piano accompanist. Other required courses usually come in the form of group lectures. The available principal studies are as follows: Composition, Orchestral Conducting, Choral Conducting, Singing, Piano, Organ, Harpsichord, Accordion, Guitar, Harp, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Saxophone, Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, Percussion Instruments, Sacred Music and Recorder.

Among the available elective courses, there are several from the fields of jazz, early music, contemporary music and musicology.

The Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Music Education is educating future teachers of music, music theory and ear training for teaching in preschool, primary school, secondary school and music school programmes.

The Master’s Degree Programme in Musical Arts is aimed at the graduates of the Bachelor’s Degree in Musical Arts. The individual lessons of the principal study are structured in the same way as in the undergraduate programme.

The Master’s Degree Programme in Instrumental and Vocal Education is intended for the graduates of the Bachelor’s Degree in Musical Arts who wish to focus on teaching their instrument or singing at primary and secondary music schools. The individual lessons of the principal study are structured in the same way as in the undergraduate programme.


The Master’s Degree Programme in Music Theory Education is designed for the graduates of the Bachelor’s Degree in Musical Arts of the following three principal studies: Composition, Conducting and Sacred Music. The programme is educating future teachers of music theory for teaching in secondary schools as well as in primary and secondary music schools. The individual lessons of the principal study are structured in the same way as in the undergraduate programme.

The Master’s Degree Programme in Music Education is providing education for future teachers of music and choral singing, who will teach in primary and secondary schools as well as in preschool and primary music schools.

PERFORMANCE ACTIVITY

The chief aim of various courses (the principal course, chamber music, orchestras, choirs etc.) is the public presentation of students’ work. The Academy of Music alone organizes four concert series (Subscription, Chamber Music, Soloist and Contemporary Music Concert Series) and a number of other concert and opera projects, altogether more than 100 public events a year. Thanks to fruitful collaboration with the National Theatre Orchestras of Ljubljana and Maribor, the Slovenian Philharmonics, the National Radio and Television Orchestra, the Police and Army Orchestras, and the Slovenian Chamber Music Theatre among others, many high quality co‑production events have taken place, which have enabled the students of the Academy of Music to gain important professional experience. In recent years, the Academy’s symphony orchestra has established its reputation as one of the best European orchestras of its kind. The productions of several operas (Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, Piccini’s La buona figliuola, Coryell’s War and Peace etc.) have received wide acclaim from the public and critics alike, and the Academy’s Big Band has successfully toured Serbia and Macedonia. Likewise, the achievements of the Academy’s best students in soloist performances with Slovenian professional orchestras have not been left unnoticed.

RESEARCH ACTIVITY

Interdisciplinary PhD in Humanities and Social Sciences is a joint programme offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Arts in collaboration with the Academy of Music, the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, the Faculty of Computer and Information Science, and the Faculty of Theology.

The Academy’s research group joins the scientists and researchers who deal with research questions in the fields of subject-related teaching methods, musicology, music theory, composition and the performance of music. Its aim is to create new knowledge and produce new works of art, which can be directly translated into classroom practice, which can enrich music and cultural life of the general population on the national scale or which can be used to represent the country’s research activity abroad. Furthermore, its findings open up numerous possibilities for interdisciplinary connections, which improve the quality of life, forge the national identity and enhance the country’s global competitiveness. The research group is involved in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the field of music. Its members collaborate in Slovenian and international projects, programme groups and research networks, participate in academic conferences and symposia home and abroad, and take part in music performing projects.

The Division of Music History organizes annual symposia on notable Slovenian composers and music performers and publishes the proceedings in the theme issue of The Journal of Music Education.
