Abstract

Jakob Jež – Musical Maverick

Jakob Jež has developed many talents and has established himself as an all-round musician. He is an accordionist, a pianist, a teacher, an editor and a publisher. His path as a composer started with self-education, and despite his academic degree he has remained a musical maverick. Under the influence of the avant-garde circle Pro Musica Viva, neo-expressionism from the beginning of his career has developed through dodecaphony, serialism and aleatoric music into his own original musical style. In his instrumental, vocal-instrumental and choral works, he listens to the nature, leans on the Slovenian folk heritage and the history of literature, respects originality and remains true to himself. His body of work places him among the most original Slovenian composers of our time.

»EN, TEN, TENERA« – JEŽEVI OTROŠKI IN MLADINSKI ZBORI V GRLICI

Abstract

»En, ten, tenera« - Children’s and Youth Choirs of Jakob Jež

Jakob Jež as an expert in the possibilities of human voice and the functioning of the vocal apparatus has dedicated a great number of his works to vocal music. The composer working mainly in music education showcases his artistic inspiration and music teaching knowledge in its fullness in music for children’s and youth choirs. Being an important researcher and expert on the vocal works of Marij Kogoj, he continues to compose and stylistically expand the music for such choral ensembles. Moreover, he has enriched some of Kogoj’s youth choirs with expressive piano accompaniment. Jakob Jež has always strived for quality lyrics. He has arranged numerous traditional songs, publishing them individually in magazines or collections, frequently by subject matter. For two decades, he was the editor of the Grlica magazine, which, under his guidance, became the most important music teaching magazine in Yugoslavia. With his professional approach as an editor, he has had a considerable impact on generations of Slovenian music teachers and choral conductors. ODNOS MED BESEDNIM IN GLASBENIM V MEŠANIH ZBORIH JAKOBA JEŽA

Vokalna glasba predstavlja pomemben del ustvarjalnosti Jakoba Ježa.

Abstract

Interplay between Textuality and Music in Mixed Choirs of Jakob Jež

Vocal music has played an important role in the work of Jakob Jež. An important topic related to vocal music is the relationship between music and literature. Their interplay has greatly proliferated after World War II, especially in the period of the avant-garde in the 1950s and 1960s . Works for mixed choirs by Jakob Jež can be divided into two main groups: first, the compositions that comply with the semantic level of the text and are, according to the composer, dedicated to a “simple” user; second, more complex works that demonstrate different ways of neutralization of the semantic level of the texts. This strongly suggests that Jakob Jež is not only familiar with the achievements of the avant-garde but has, to a certain degree, also managed to successfully incorporate them into his own compositional thinking.

SOŽITJE VOKALA IN INSTRUMENTALA V KANTATAH JAKOBA JEŽA

Abstract

Coexistence of Vocal and Instrumental Paradigms in Cantatas of Jakob Jež

In his modernist search for the pure expression, Jakob Jež resorts to a clearer formal and textural reduction, which cleanses his musical language of every redundancy. In doing so, however, he remains loyal to unique complementary and overlapping coexistence of vocal and instrumental paradigms (Reflections of Hajam's Verses, 1967; Iacobi Galli disticha, 1969). One of the peaks of his musical expression, characterized by the exceeding of the genre boundaries, is reached in his cantatas. There, he connects the content of a selected text with the expressive force of modernist musical language, which eludes the simple semantisation of the textual content. Jež’s cantatas Do fraig amors (1968), Brižinski spomeniki (1970) and Pogled zvezd (1974) offer a glimpse into spatially and historically remote worlds and are painted with a sharp contemporary musical expression, in which the composer finds, as he puts it, “spontaneity, power and conviction” of music.

Abstract

Choral compositions of Lojze Lebič

An important part of Lojze Lebič's works are written for choir, for which he composed music in all of his creative periods. Nevertheless, despite this continuity, it is possible to discern gradual changes in the composer's choral compositions, which are evident especially in the ongoing development of his indiviual vocal and instrumental style that stands on the border between choral, theatrical and ritual.

LJUDSKO IZROČILO SLOVENCEV V ITALIJI V ZBOROVSKIH OBDELAVAH PAVLETA MERKUJA

Abstract

Folk Tradition of Slovenians in Itay in the Choral Works of Composer Pavle Merkù

The article analyzes some arrangements of traditional songs by composer Pavle Merkù, which testify to his relationship toward the folk tradition of Slovenians in Italy and to the special attention he gave to the style of his arrangements. Merkù’s creative process takes place in the midway between his two loves–language and music, both of which he nourished until the end of his career. He knew how to use music to evaluate the text and how to enhance the music by delicately selecting texts. Moreover, he, with a great deal of healthy national consciousness, revived and recorded, probably as the last witness, the genuine and full-blooded national heritage of forsaken and marginalized Slovenians in Italy. Particularly interesting is his relationship and his completely individual approach towards discovering the values of folk heritage, which are essential for developing national consciousness and the basis for the development of every nation.

HOW TO SING PROFESSIONALLY WITH CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS. CORE COMPETENCES OF CHILDREN'S AND YOUTH CHOIR DIRECTORS

Since the beginning of the 21st century, a series of new singing initiatives was registered throughout German speaking countries. This development caused an increase of special training programs as well as master programs for children´s and youth choir directors. In relation to that, the question arose which competences children´s and youth choir directors need for their work with children and adolescents. This article outlines a competence model with the aim of dealing with this question. The model is based on two foundations: first, the competences listed in recent handbooks for singing with children and adolescents, and, second, the competences found in the literature on teacher education and music pedagogy.

Ključne kompetence zborovodij za strokovno vodenje otroških in mladinskih pevskih zborov

RAZMISLEK O SODOBNEM SLOVENSKEM ZBOROVSTVU

Abstract:

Brief Overview of Contemporary Choral Singing in Slovenia

The foundations of Slovenian choral music are built on the love of singing, beautiful musical heritage and also on its cultural and social position. In the past, singing was present everywhere–especially in churches and soon also in schools. The latter were mostly situated in towns and monasteries, and helped us built our identity along the fragile borders with the neighbouring nations. In the middle of the 19th century, social conditions were perfect for the flourishing of Slovenian choral singing, which was improving from decade to decade and soon became the basis of our identity. Today, choral singing is at a high level, both in terms of performance as well as composition, and dedicated teachers surely deserves some of the credit. There have been many successful choral composers in Slovenia, among them also eager contemporary composer Jakob Jež. Slovenian choirs represent their country successfully home and abroad. Nevertheless, many challenges await contemporary choral singing, both immaterial and material in nature. If these can be managed, great future lies ahead of it.
