In 2010 the Mediterranean/Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Youth Orchestra (OJMPACA) signed a partnership agreement with the Aix-en-Provence Music Festival and London Symphony Orchestra in order to found an international orchestral academy. The academy will be held each year in July during the Aix-en-Provence Music Festival.
The academy brings together approximately 70 young musicians from the OJMPACA, 20 from the festival’s European Music Academy and around 7 from the LSO. It is directed and supervised by a conductor and musicians from the LSO.
In 2010 Krisjan Jarvï conducted the youth orchestra in the festival’s closing concert at the Théâtre de l’Archevêché. The programme included Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring and Britten’s Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes.
In July 2011 the academy’s training course will be held between 17 and 24 July and the concert tour (Aix, Marseille, Toulon, Monaco) between 25 and 29 July. The programme will be conducted by François-Xavier Roth and include Mahler’s First Symphony and a short complementary work.
As of next year this top-level training will be available to young musicians studying in music schools in the Mediterranean. With this in mind, I would be delighted to include one or two musicians from your music school in the next academy and every year thereafter. The OJMPACA and Aix-en-Provence Music Festival will cover the travel, teaching, meal and accommodation expenses of musicians who are selected.
I would also like to remind you that Marseille-Provence will be European Capital of Culture in 2013. The OJMPACA will be organising several projects to celebrate the event in which we would like you to participate.
